“I was retracing the line of a memory,” Marissa Nadler sings on “New Radiations”, the lead single from the Gothic Americana songwriter’s new album. If it feels like it’s been a lifetime ago since we’ve collectively felt the outlines of the light in this world were tangibly within our grasp, then Nadler searching for it through her song has a transfixing way of bringing it faintly into view. It also remains fascinating how every single time her voice and the soft swell of instruments behind it — a haunted folk strum accented by a western twang, the looming buzz of synths, and a psychedelic spiral of electricity — saunter their way back into the room through the gauzed curtains in spectral fashion, she invites you in with her a supernatural presence, pulling you into a different dimension of this world regardless of how much darkness surrounds it. An army of ghosts and broken glass can’t stop her from surpassing that threshold. As much as surviving this cosmic chaos can take a toll on one’s inner energy, it’s the preservation of a memory radiating out that can bring you back to life.
