Lifeguard – “Like You’ll Lose”

There’s a youthfully-fueled fire raging inside of Lifeguard ever since they burst onto the scene a few years back, and across a doubling of two highly promising EPs, they’ve easily become one of the more exciting young new artists to watch each and every one of their moves. “Like You’ll Lose”, a highlight from the trio’s debut full-length, Ripped and Torn, is a maturation away from that chronic, combustible motion explosion and nervous energy that has trickled its way out ahead of its release. The listen instead embraces an inverse of standing inside all of the chaos. In their relative stillness, Lifeguard collectively conduct the way each particle hits the outside walls, expanding their energy rather than through clangoring echoes of guitars, Motorik drums, and a tightly-wound rhythmic sway led by Asher Case’s bassline that makes the heavier elements feel featherlight — kindred to his dad’s densely atmospheric art-rock dives into zero gravity with his band, FACS. “Stay ahead / On and on / Make it back / Right on queue,” goes one line. It’s as if they’ve discovered how make order out of chaos.
