There doesn’t always need to be a deeper, concrete meaning behind every song written in the world if the execution of the instrumentation and production delivers on all fronts, but it definitely helps when the feels give it all the more purpose. Shaki Tavi seems like the kind of musician who puts technicality and emotion equally at the forefront of his sonic smash, and then lets each inform how heavily the energy rips on “Breaker”, the lead single from the Los Angeles-by-way-of-Oklahoma DIY scene lifer’s sophomore effort, Minor Slip. From where we are in this moment with indie rock, it’s the perfect place to start if you’re just familiarizing yourself with the moniker of Leon Manson. We’re headed into places uncertain in more ways than just one, and the listen reflects that in the way Manson diffuses shoegaze’s swelling feedback against a boom bap breakbeat — a bridge between the daily disconnect, whatever rips you right back into feeling everything, and right back to those tiny moments of peace in your head when we’re able to regain some mental footing amidst a world of noise.
