Sarah Register – “does it hurt”

“Who am I to you?,” Sarah Register asks in the opening moments of “does it hurt”, as the corrosion of a voicemail and a digital crush of noise merge together at the forefront of the listen’s frame. As the second of two debut singles under her own name, the former Talk Normal vocalist certainly is forcing listeners familiar with her past work in the realm of experimental rock and no-wave, or even as the trusted axe in Kim Gordon’s live electronic-rock fusion, to rethink previous perceptions of what has defined her identity up until this point. Even Register herself seems to be searching for some kind of concrete answer to her own inquiry, though as the rest of reality dissipates around her and eventually, is consumed in a heavy buzzsaw of static, it puts the accompanying visuals which she co-directed alongside Amy Rose Khoshbin into greater meaningful focus. “I can’t take this anymore,” she retreats. The dancers lose their balance as time fast-forwards, and everything moves further into the dark. No answers just yet, but the allure to follow Register down this path of pain with her is tempting…
