Armlock – “Strobe”

Armlock had these pages buzzing last year with the release of their latest effort and first for Run for Cover Records, Seashell Angel Lucky Charm, for one reason in particular: the Melbourne duo of vocalist and guitarist Lam and guitarist and keyboardist Mitchell have their fingers on all of the pulses of what’s making the currents of the modern underground. Take whatever is happening across the spectrums indie rock, shoegaze, slowcore, emo, trip-hop, underground rap, and electronic music at this very moment, funnel them into the pair’s minimalist designs, and there’s a permanently cool, wistful vibe waiting to soundtrack your next memory deck. “Strobe” add another, arriving as their latest standalone single that carries on in that energy as we tip-toe into warmer weather months. Allusions and repetition have Lam reminiscing about blood pacts, laughing with an old friend, and dads being dads. They’re fragments of simple things that make the mundane profound when circling back to what matters most amid the busy-ness of life. “No scoping, heat seeking, we can’t miss / I’m a strobe, blinding eyes with the glow,” he sings. The coziness of being grounded is what makes this one something you can’t miss once you feel it.
