Softcult – “Pill To Swallow”

Like the just-aforementioned BLEED, Softcult are peaking right on time in their creative superpowers leading into their debut album. Unlike the aforementioned BLEED who will have a stage ready to expand for them in all corners of the heavy rock universe, “Pill To Swallow”, the latest single from Toronto twin siblings Mercedes Arn-Horn and Phoenix Arn-Horn mediates a calmer edge on the “big rock” sound which co-exists somewhere between the fuzzy grunge-pop warmth of Momma, Soccer Mommy’s expanded bedroom pop impressionism, and Olivia Rodrigo alternative pop bite in their apt understanding of sculpting dreamy indie rock with a wider scale perception in mind. During these times of chronic mental fatigue thanks to the reality of our collapsing daily existence, it doesn’t hurt that they’re offering a glimmer of hope within the haze with their salve of lucid harmonies and burgeoning electricity. “A hard pill to swallow / And I’m looking up through a pinhole / Down at the bottom,” they sing, but it’s like they’re ascending from its depths by what’s sparking from within.
