Balance and Composure are more than just with you in spirit — they’re firing on all cylinders in their return after releasing one of the scene’s best albums of 2024 and about to head out on the road opening for Turnover to mark their own milestone. You don’t take any moment with either band that’s back in its prime for granted, and so it’s great to hear B&C are morbidly “Alive and Well”. Lore has it this was the track that kickstarted the broody melodic hardcore band’s comeback and was recorded during the same sessions as the longplay, but there’s a vigor here that demands it’d rather stand alone in its own singularity. The words of vocalist Jon Simmons are damning evidence of that. “Just so you know, so it’s understood, this means nothing to me / Why celebrate? I want to die and I really mean it.” It’s great to hear our heroes living to see another day, but it’s even better to hear them put into emotion what we wish upon every empty-hearted greeting that finds us.
