Softie – “Kiss Kiss Kiss”

If the shoegaze revival is going to renew its lease any longer, then it needs to be approaching bent sonic waves in the way Softie are. The Oakland five-piece, led by DIY scene multi-instrumental stalwart Nicholas Coleman alongside his band comprised of guitarists Eli Wengrin and Nash Wood, bassist Angeles Garcia, and drummer Lucas Wieser, forgets about whatever happened in the ’90s and instead focus on where the sound promised to go in the future during its initial revival in the late 2000s through a merger of amorphous guitars on the verge of collapse being held up by scuzzy, lo-fi indie rock. They get in on all of that action with “Kiss Kiss Kiss” — the first single off their forthcoming EP, SOMERSAULT. Though its backdrop swirls in the blissed wall-of-sound canvas blueprinted by My Bloody Valentine, the careening electricity produced by its grinding rock riffs fills the void for what’s been lost in Hotline TNT’s sudden hi-fi anthem transformation. This is the sound of everything falling apart while falling into perfect place regardless, held up by that the sweet sensation of what goes along with any physical oxytocin crush.

Softie’s SOMERSAULT will be released May 9th on Cherub Dream Records.
