TURNSTILE – “NEVER ENOUGH”

It seems like it’s been so long — four years to be exact — and still all the mystery still goes with TURNSTILE on “NEVER ENOUGH”, the lead single and title track from the transcendent hardcore band’s third studio effort. The moves here might look and sound familiar, but maybe that’s by design. Leading up to the announcement of 2021’s landmark scene setter, GLOW ON, the Baltimore band similarly tip-toed back into the pit by presenting listeners a glance at their next chapter with the sensory-stimulating “TURNSTILE LOVE CONNECTION” short film that established its kaleidoscopic effects and a taste of the riffier energy awaiting behind them. If I had to wager a bet, “NEVER ENOUGH” could be something like their version of a “The 1975”, the intro track to every album by the 1975 that begins their albums by more or less establishing its sonic mood board through a slight variation of the previous self. Here, they switch out that cosmic sparkle for ambient rainbow waves before a clean, crisp snap of electricity and Daniel Fang’s drums blast through the sky. “Never let your guard down / Wherever you go,” Brendan Yates heeds their newest mantra. Its accompanying self-directed music video — filled with shots of waves crashing at night, Yates on a jet ski, a bird in flight, the sea at sunrise, and a slow-motion closure of the band hitting the stage in front of a pit gathering in bodies — is pure hardcore art house cinema. “It’s never enough!,” he shouts. While the curtain still hasn’t been pulled fully back, it’s sounding like they want it all.
