Wishy – “Over and Over”

Many an alternative pop star lately has attempted to strike a balance between the clean and the crinkle of polished guitar rock with a broader appeal in mind, but so far, only Wishy seem to stand out in being able to pull off the formula. Leave it to the a group of indie rockers who in their own respective past lives with previous bands built that foundation from the ground up to understand how to get there. On “Over and Over”, it’s the understatement that gets the point across. Off their forthcoming EP, Planet Popstar, vocalist and guitarist Kevin Krauter’s main course is a nimble display of entwining melody around the hook from the slight hand of an acoustic riff that has a mesmerizing way of working itself in and around your headspace. “I was a fool to try over and over again / I wanted to wake and find gold in my house / It must have run through my mind over a hundred times / Then I learned to be satisfied living without it,” he sings. If there’s something to be read into that admission through a listen that sounds like this, then maybe it’s that overthinking the process only gets in the way of finding treasure in a simpler approach.
