Superheaven – “Stare At The Void”

You could easily argue that bands like Soundgarden and Silverchair walked so that bands like Superheaven could run well before most of their listeners even existed as gametes. No, seriously. The other week, I was getting my haircut, and the grinding riffs of “Israel’s Son” nearly 30 long years removed from the release of Frogstomp had me thinking that there was a crack in the space-time continuum, and that somehow Superheaven had may their way onto my barber’s playlist. Memory eventually self-corrected, but “Stare At The Void”, the latest preview from the Doylestown rockers’ eponymous return effort, really does connects those gaps in eras clearly. They’ve already mastered the art of a heavy-gaze influence on a whole new generation of grunge-indebted artist who are still playing catch-up, but here, the black hole sun has grown even larger in pulling in some of their most melodic gravity yet. Complete with instantaneously memorable stop-motion animation from its Hayden Hall-helmed video that would have made for classic 120 Minutes regular rotation during its time, it’s as if Superheaven have broken their way through timelines and are taking their rightful place amongst the alternative rock gods .
