With their 2023 album, Keep It Together, Western Mass’ best kept indie rock secret, Lost Film, leveled up from the lo-fi of their earliest work and began to connect the dots in a clearer sound transient across dream-swirled indie-pop and emo rock deep in the wistfulness of the daily life mundane. “Pilot Light”, a new single from the Easthampton band led by Jim Hewitt, discovers even further brightness from the inside by gazing even further beyond the cold and dark — a bittersweet tangible for anyone who can survive and come back alive with hope still in tact after navigating yet another New England winter. What begins as a distant recollection soon warms to a glow when ignited by a waking feeling of something waiting just around the corner of the journey. “It can’t be long / ‘Til Summer wins / I feel it now / I’ve shed my skin,” Hewitt sings over sparking synthesizers, bass chords set in drive, and Jeremy Woods’ drums punching tiny holes into the bleak horizon. He can see the sun through them, and once it’s firmly flourishing in his mind, it’s then that “Pilot Light” sets off for that better place beyond everything that came before now.
Lost Film’s “Pilot Light” single is available now on Relief Map Records.
