According to fib, “PS” — the latest preview from the Philly experimental indie rockers’ debut album, Heavy Lifting — is their love letter to pop and rock music that took them a whole 30 minutes to crank out in a basement. Lest we remind you, this is the same band who warped, tangled, and then untangled riffs and traditional songwriting structures on the LP’s initial single, so to hear something more akin to a straighter path unfolding their way is still very much a thing of unconventional sound, but also, maybe a little frightening to know that if fib wanted to go this route perpetually, they could easily upend the course of symmetry in these dynamics just as easily. Something about balance doesn’t sit well with them regardless, as the tail end of the listen ruptures at its own will. “Need some help getting well / But I can’t see it getting better on its own,” shouts vocalist Gage Nelson over an exclamation mark of hyper-wound post-punk. Perhaps boxing themselves into all of that conventionalism has done them in. Even an attempt at centering can lead to its own wild byproduct experiments like this.
