Patrick Wolf feat. Zola Jesus – “Limbo”

It’s admittedly been a minute since I’ve been in the magic position with listening to Patrick Wolf. “Limbo”, the latest single from the UK art-pop songwriter’s return effort, Crying The Neck, is neither a Hell nor a Heaven of a way to pull you back into his fantastical graces — it’s a miracle place that’s better even if it exists in the uncertainties of a breaking in-between. A big reason for this is who’s riding shotgun alongside Wolf down purgatory road. Zola Jesus, who’s been been quietly nestled in the Wisconsin woods since 2022’s underrated ARKHON, retreats from the wild with her peak Pitchfork industry era-jaded spirit by her side on what may be not just the final breaths of a dying relationship, but that of the last remaining pivots to their own version of stomp-clap country grandeur that we didn’t know we needed. Together, their dark energies sync over guitars waning over thistle and rustically gothic Americana piano. Even if each verse’s sentence sung is misaligned with the other (and that’s the whole point…), the listen’s poetically harmonious chorus hits and absolutely deserves to take up all of the space in that claustrophobic room the two sahre. “And will we run / Out of limbo / Or shuffle off off Buffalo?,” they wonder. Together, these two cosmic forces have you convinced they’ll defy all logic and somehow make it…
