BLEED – “Marathon”

It’s not a sprint, it’s a “Marathon”, as goes the saying. To that, BLEED ask, “Why can’t it be both?” For the Dallas heavy alternative rockers, this moment has been building in momentum steadily since emerging as an underground success story behind the promise of their 2021 EP, Somebody’s Closer. As the lead single from the band’s upcoming self-titled debut — to be released on 20 Buck Spin — the listen hits all the marks happening within the era-transcendent spaces of hardcore and metal right now in its use of thick, distortion-weighted riffs swaying propulsive as melody surges behind them from the power cast by guitarist Ryan Hughes’ vocals. In a day and age when alternative metal-gaze originals Deftones are headlining sold-out arena tours behind a new found interest from a generation who wasn’t even born yet when they made their own crater into the scene, and bands like BLEED’s near-future tourmates in One Step Closer or their fellow Texans in Narrow Head recontextualizing those same heavier sonics for modern day hardcore pits, BLEED’s proper arrival turns out to be right on time.
