SPELLLING is unlike any other artist in the paths she takes. When she smoothes R&B into the cosmos, it sounds like a new dimension is breaking through this universe. When she deconstructs and reorchestrates that same dark matter using more a traditional composition, it still doesn’t resemble anything else made from the same substance. “Destiny Arrives”, the latest offering from the Bay Area shapeshifter songwriter’s new album, Portrait of My Heart, is a reprieve from the aggro rock reinvention that has preceded it thus far, but nonetheless, another singularity in pulling the fantastical from her eye-wide wonderment in exploring the true nature of the self. This fits its surrounding heart shapes in the way Chrystia Cabral transforms right before us into a celestial being. Though the strings here are non-electric, its their grande force pushing the listen’s underlying synthetic ground into evolution, all of which cements the fact that with SPELLLING, change will always be inevitable until she arrives at her final destination.
