Like many of us, SPY have Seen Enough. The latest EP — and first since signing with heavy hardcore label, Closed Casket Activities — from the Bay Area hardcore punks pays little mind to trend-posturing or reinforcing their sound with melded metallic weight, and instead, packs an acid-filled gut by embracing their ugliest instincts to match the corrosive energy of a world free-falling apart around us, seemingly voluntarily. There’s no need for SPY to overstay their welcome in getting their message of disdain across for what’s happening either, wrecking everything and leaving in just 10 minutes time with six songs that bleed kerosene and light the next match into the other.
The heated intensity further commits the band’s ferocious live energy onto tape with an assist from Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Gouge Away) while continuing to wave a flag set on fire by their scene’s torchbearers CEREMONY 20 years ago. Vocalist Peter Pawlak’s vitriol foams at the mouth at our societal decay and new overlords in hyperspeed as guitarists Drew Satterlund and Cody Kryst, bassist Thomas Sherry, and drummer Josh Mendoza keep the flames raging high throughout until there’s nothing left in their wake but soot and ash. “Quit the fucking act,” he warns in the listen’s final moments before the cord abruptly gets caught. On one hand, you’d hate to see what SPY will do if that doesn’t happen. On the other, it’ll probably sound fucking awesome.
Highlights: “On The Brink”, “Overlord”, “Quit the Act”
SPY’s Seen Enough is available now on Closed Casket Activities.
