For those screaming out, “WU LYF, but make it noise!,” well here you go. “Animal Death Already Breathing”, the latest from Brooklyn experimental noise rockers YHWH Nailgun’s upcoming debut album, 45 Pounds, attaches their discordant approach to soundcraft onto a more melodic position that easily makes sense of such a claim (though, that likely has to do a lot with the fact that Zach Borzone’s smoke-seared vocals resemble the tonal texture of the short-lived — or is it soon-to-be-resurrected? — Manchester heavy-pop band’s frontman, Ellery James Roberts.) Regardless, there’s something cosmic about the timing of one band’s arrival and the other’s reemergence coming to a crossroads on this timeline. There’s going to be room made for both even if the space needs to be forced, which this track does in tempering YHWH Nailgun’s aggressive nature through pouncing tribal drums and shout-backs that allow “pop” light to break through its surroundings. Tread carefully, however — that growl is a warning to not get to close to the beast, no matter how welcoming to the outside it may seem…
YHWH Nailgun’s 45 Pounds will be March 25th on AD 93 / Many Hats.
