Wishy – “Fly”

Instincts have proven to be right on that Wishy’s “Planet Popstar” was a sign of a sound bigger to come from Wishy, as the Midwestern quintet continue to “Fly” even higher following their ascent from last year’s buzzworthy debut album, Triple Seven. You can no longer get by just chalking up this band as being mere homage to fuzz-blown ’90s indie rock with a touch of dream-pop revivalism, as given even more time to tinker with those formulas in the studio has given us the latest piece of melodically-perfect alternative pop from their just-announced EP. This one melts through even the coldest points of the winter, simultaneously soaking up sunshine with a touch of hand-tapped percussion while circling the drain of hazy relational existentialism. “But you say / Shut up and live your life,” sings co-vocalist and guitarist Nina Pitchkites. “Time won’t stand still / Come back down to earth.” There’s that whole saying about flying too close to the sun, but it doesn’t seem to apply to Wishy here.

Wishy’s Planet Popstar will be released April 25th on Winspear.
