ETHEREAL is the name of JIVEBOMB’s anticipated debut full-length, and that’s certainly a choice for an album title considering that word is probably more synonymous these days within today’s shoegaze and dream-pop fields than it is the life-questioning hardcore which the Baltimore crew circle the drain around. For vocalist Kat Madeira, the state of being heavenly isn’t so much a sound as it is a state of mind — and destroying what once was of the self — on “ESTRELA”, ETHEREAL‘s latest preview. Over a throttling of drum beats served up ultrafast, corrosive riffs spewing through the speakers, and a nod of Billie Holiday existentialism, the breakdown tears down mere mortals from heaven and earth. “Angels have no thoughts of returning the old me / You stay there complacent / You chose your reality,” she growls, ripping through her old skin and taking on an entirely different form. “I’m new / Stars aligned now point and laugh at you.” If anyone wants to dare step to her and tell her that she’s not of the sky now, best of luck..
