Horsegirl – “Frontrunner”

“Frontrunner” is all about those simple pleasures made into unmatched moments held beneath the microscope of Horsegirl’s intricate eye. As the final preview from the Chicago indie rock trio’s imminent sophomore follow-up, Phonetics On and On, the listen again appeals similarly to its predecessors in taking repeated looks at the same notes, words, and shapes in sound, only to uncover a newness in feeling them over and over as opposed to if they were otherwise left uninspected. In this case, it’s the bliss of waking up to next to someone you’re really into. “In the morning / When you’re sleeping / I can’t wait, and I can’t wait to compromise,” sing Penelope Lowenstein and Nora Cheng. The clock ticks down over just a thimble of bassline and the quiet of anticipation builds until the waking hours arrive. It’s what keeps you up at night, in the best kind of way.
