Bambara – “Letters From Sing Sing”

The dark of Bambara’s sound has often worn itself with a bit of swagger to it, but the latest preview from the Brooklyn-by-way-of-Atlanta band’s new longplay, Birthmarks, completely dedicates itself to braggadocious goth worship. It’s a tale as old as time in the world of a devilishly handsome cold-blooded murderer. A man unalives another man. An attraction to danger lures in the infatuation of female fans from behind bars, with their letters and spiciest posed pictures collecting inside his locker. His fate is already sealed to the electric chair, but there’s only last thing he needs to do before they hit the switch, and that’s win over the bloodlust of the dearly departed’s girlfriend. As far as natural born killers go, Bambara have mastered the art of morbid grandeur in dramatic, cinematic post-punk fashion here, as if inching closer to death row means nothing to them just so long as they look dashing in a pair of polished python boots and get the girl to complete the look.
