True Green – “Consider the Priesthood” b/w “Falconry”

We first met True Green, the lo-fi indie-pop band led by Minneapolis-based songwriter Dan Hornsby, last year when he and his circle of collaborators released the very promising cassette-friendly debut, My Lost Decade. Hornsby was kind enough to speak with these pages about the listen, which amounted to a fascinating read into the mind for those inquiring about his wordsmith powers, as he’s also an acclaimed novelist behind the books Sucker and the soon-to-be-adapted-into-film Via Negativa. That storytelling ink continues to spill over into his musical craft, especially those from the latter novel — a tale of corruption of power from nefarious places — on his latest singles, “Consider the Priesthood” and “Falconry”. Joined by multi-instrumentalist Tailer Ransom of Owl’s Head Mountain on banjo, synthesizer, and singing in harmony alongside Big Clown drummer Zach Mitchell and bassist John Goddard, each is a stark contrast to the bumbling townie characters we met on My Lost Decade that necessitated the late afternoon glow off True Green’s bedroom pop windows. “Consider the Priesthood” on its surface is deceptively warmer in texture, though its pacing is peculiarly ominous in pace, leading the rising climax in the Sufjanesque emo doomsdaying of “Falconry”. Whether it makes you want to listen for more or pick up his book, he’s got you hooked on the plot.

True Green’s “Consider the Priesthood” b/w “Falconry” is available now on Spacecase Records.
