Jane Remover – “JRJRJR”

Somewhere, I was led astray. Upon the release of Jane Remover’s 2023 breakthrough sophomore effort, Census Designated, it was stated in the larger media discourse that the New Jersey songwriter and producer was a shoegaze artist. Because it didn’t add up to what you actually heard — for all intents and purposes, let’s call it experimental noise-pop — these pages didn’t let it sink in fully. Jane Remover is in fact, not a shoegaze artist (though, her side-project, Venturing, ventures into that territory.) Jane Remover is something else and on “JRJRJR”, the lead single from her new album, Revengeseekerz, she spells it out loud over a clash of hyper-pop and industrial electronic beats with an Internet rap swagger. “And I do whatever the fuck / ‘Cause I’ve been whatever the fuck / I might pull out a new face, change my name, then my city,” she swerves over its bridge. “You tried to take my drugs, good luck tryna fix me / You would do it too, I saw it, I heard you call it l-l-love.” Taking on the form of Jesus in the mosh pit while throwing down against bros who only show up for the pop songs in Biblical terms, the listen feels reverse apocalyptic in the sense that her dead name attempts a second coming, she’s ready to burn it down.
