The Weather Station – “Neon Signs”

“I’ve gotten used to feeling like I’m crazy — or just lazy / Why can’t I get off this floor? Think straight anymore?,” wonders Tamara Lindeman on “Neon Signs”. The lead single from the Weather Station’s new album, Humanhood, sets its first steps from the listen into a familiar foreground not too different from her 2021 critical breakthrough in 2021’s Ignorance where richer details in natural, ornate instrumentation lightly rollicked deep through her existential ponderings, but with more uncertainty. As the signs begin to flash, the path begins to unwind and get blurry. Each new corner sparks another foreign flourish. Piano lines accelerate as strings, drums, and a guiding flute sweep Lindeman’s voice around multiple possibilities of direction. “‘Til I fell out of desire like a slipped knot / I fell out of desire and nothing caught / I fell out of the fire wasn’t even hot / I could feel nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, naught.” Flailing through blinding light, her honesty will guide her through.
