LANA, the long-awaited sister album to SZA’s SOS, finally dropped before the holiday break — as part of the latter’s deluxe edition, no less — and it makes sense that her alien bug landed how it did. These are 15 additional tracks from the same sessions that are more rounded off in being pop chart-minded despite their genre-traveling superpowers, and that will only help the R&B pop superstar’s stadium reach when she performs alongside Kendrick Lamar during their upcoming spring stadium tour (and likely, his Superbowl halftime show.) It’s a solid listen to cap off another great year built off S.O.S.‘ momentum, and if there’s one absolute gem in them you can imagine becoming another top 10 hit, it’d be “BMF”. It’s a lighter affair from SZA, thanks to its interpolation of the Brazilian bossa nova classic, “That Girl from Ipanema”, styled in the pastel hues of French guitar pop. Despite its clean execution, it doesn’t mean SZA doesn’t get dirty with it. “Young and fine and dark and handsome / The boy from south Detroit keep bossing / And I can’t keep my panties from dropping / He’s so fly,” she swoons through the chorus’ breeze. She’s having fun in the moment, pilling on emotional ecstasy and being tossed around by her Tarzan, even if the oncoming crash is inevitable.
SZA’s SOS Deluxe: LANA is available now on Top Dawg Entertainment / RCA Records.
