closer – ‘Paris in the spring’

As the year comes to an end, an unfortunate aspect of it is that so do the lifespans of some of our favorite bands. The Brooklyn-based screamo band closer have been an important part of its resurgent narrative over the past decade, keeping DIY ethos in tact in their operation led by vocalist and drummer Ryann Slausson alongside guitarist Matthew Van Asselt and bassist Griffin Irvine. The trio put out two of the genre’s best albums in recent years in 2018’s All This Will Be and 2021’s within one stem, and Touché Amoré’s Jeremy Bolm is a fan, having invited them to take part on his Secret Voice screamo comp, Balladeers, Redefined, just last year. Alas, members moving in different directions — primarily with Slausson relocating to Philly and creating in another great band in Sonagi these days — have closer deciding to call it a day following their final show in Brooklyn this Saturday. Before then, they’ve dropped two final tracks under the very poetic singles title, Paris In the Spring. If that conjures up memories of a certain Thursday song (whom they recently opened for at one of their recent Waiting anniversary shows,) that would be astute influence on its A-side, “Slow Hell”, while its B-side, “Polyanna”, really leaves you wondering what could have been of closer on a possible third chapter as they break down the breakdown into mathematical aggressions. “I see you as you / I see the end,” Slausson screams. It’s not so much an ellipses as much as it is a band leaving one last mark on their epitaph.

closer’s Paris in the spring single is available now.
