Knifeplay – “Old Time Christmas”

Will this December be better than the last? By the sounds of it, probably not for Tj Strohmer and the rest of Knifeplay on “Old Time Christmas”, this year’s installation to the Philly experimental dream rockers’ annual charity compilation, For the Holidays, which benefits Broad Street Love. Sleigh bells ring, but as you listen, the wistfulness for a yuletide past comes with a heavier heart for early country breakfast and downtown lights in the passage of time which has taken away family members, plane tickets too unaffordable to visit home, spending the holiday at a bar instead, and the sound of gunshots rather than reindeer hooves going off as you rest your head asleep. Nostalgia typically leaves you with that warm and fuzzy feeling that’s synonymous with the holiday season, yet Knifeplay have — in the melancholic tradition of Christmas stories like “The Little Match Girl” or “The Junkie’s Christmas” — turned it into a cold reminder that not everyone’s day is a thing of bright and merry.

Knifeplay’s For the Holidays is available now until January 1st. All proceeds will benefit Broad Street Love.
