Sky Ferreira has finally been let off the “Leash”. Now no longer held captive by the major label overlords whom were preventing her from releasing her long-delayed sophomore effort, Masoschism, the creator of one of the most important albums of the past decade in her debut, Night Time, My Time, is taking back her creative autonomy in the music world on her first new single in two years — written for the A24 Nicole Kidman vehicle Babygirl. It’s an excellent check-in in hearing where the songwriter’s edge resides in the present day — a guitar glitter-on-fire and synth-smearing dream-pop retribution anthem that doubles as a realization in how Night Time, My Time‘s sound still is one that the future hasn’t fully caught up with just yet (giving further credence to the argument that Ferreira is to art-pop as what My Bloody Valentine and all of their lengthy periods in-between releases are to shoegaze.) “I tore apart this veil of shame / I fought so hard just to be erased / Wanna be caught, go down in flames / I know I’ll never get my way,” her voice is a cool vapor against the fire. The ties may cut, but she’s brandishing marks left behind as a reminder to rise from the ash.
Sky Ferreira’s “Leash” single is available now on A24 Music.
