2024 has really solidified the fact that we probably don’t need any more grungy post-hardcore bands. This isn’t to say the originators of this wave of riff shattering aren’t welcome to do what they’ve been doing well ahead of their time, though, either. Superheaven blazed more than just trails across hardcore and alternative rock circles with their hot boxed heavy influence on the scene over a decade ago when they were one of the early darlings amongst the then-burgeoning Run for Cover Records roster. Since taking a break as a band following 2015’s sophomore effort, Ours Is Chrome, the Doyleston band’s guitar-dense sound has often been imitated, but only they’ve managed to stand out in viral fashion and deservingly so. The band’s return at 2022’s Sound and Fury indicated something more was left to be written in their story, and it finally appears we’re getting that now that they’ve signed with Blue Grape Music alongside Spiritual Cramp and GEL, releasing the new single, the appropriately titled “Long Gone” with this news. Time hasn’t weakened what Superheaven wrought by any means. Fuzz pedals are blown out extra hard and the hooks levitate you from this earth. “We opened a window to a different place / Climbed through and forgot ourselves / We’re so past the point that we could ever be saved / Angels from a distant hell,” sings co-vocalist Jake Clarke. Their second coming isn’t promising salvation necessarily, but it’s good to have them back to burn with the rest of this world.
