Any alternative head is familiar with a “Freak Scene”. It’s probably a good guess that the Tubs are as well. Despite some decades and a whole ocean between them, the Welsh jangle-punk band are channeling a kindred anxious energy from the Dinosaur Jr. songbook into their own “Mode” on the lead single from their sophomore album, Cotton Crown. Fringes straying from the quartet’s corners as chords move from shimmer into fray, it’s a more than welcome alteration in their outward appearance even if the more tidy looks of their 2023 debut, Dead Meat, suited them just fine. “Yeah, I’m not myself / Haven’t been him for weeks / Been deranged / Been such a freak,” sings Owen Williams. It’s not just playing the part of being emotionally worse for the wear with words like that. The Tubs know how to dress their sound for the role, too.
