Open Head – “House”

There’s a saying that in doing the same thing over and over, you are subscribing to the definition of insanity. The movements Open Head design through their sound manifest that notion on “House”, the latest single and something of a thesis statement from the Hudson Valley experimental industrial band’s upcoming sophomore effort, What Is Success. By embodying the mechanical through the sentient, vocalist and guitarist Jared Ashdown empathically spirals into what might the state of the mind become if perpetually devised to repeat itself in the same patterns. This, only intensified by he and bandmates Jonathan McCarthy, Brandon Minnervini, and Daniel Schwartz’s construction of noise, using everything from samples of scrap metal to a bowed prepared guitar fit with screwdriver bits that make the machine sound like it’s on the brink of self-collapse. “I don’t wanna know what habit forms chains / I just wanna be done for awhile,” he seethes through the electrical tension. This is the human computer, nearing meltdown.

Open Head’s What Is Success will be released January 24th on Wharf Cat Records.
