“Are you afraid of me?,” asks Uriel Avida on “Spectre”, the latest highlight from trauma ray’s forthcoming debut album, Chameleon. This question repeats itself many times over throughout the listen, yet it’s central to the haunt it wants to escape. Whether Avida is speaking through the murk of the Fort Worth heavy shoegaze’s band’s sound to himself or to someone else needn’t be defined. Maybe in this moment, it could be just about anything that clings onto you from the past. That voice is in pain, and it carries through the dissonance, stepping closer and closer out from the shadows before its question comes crashing through full-blown. It’s the ghosts way of saying it wants to be given up. Shake the spectre that keeps you from moving on.
