Speaking of Manning Fireworks, let’s not forget where the year of MJ Lenderman began with his rustic guitar-slinging guest spots across his album’s kindred equal in Waxahatchee’s Tigers Blood. It’s only fitting that as indie rock autumn approaches its peak that he and Katie Crutchfield would get right back to it with another track to bookend their collaboration from the other side of the story on “Much Ado About Nothing”. Here, it seems some things never change in Crutchfield’s wandering thinking patterns. Where she last let her mind run wild and didn’t know why she did it, she’s now accepting the habit and found comfort in her unfiltered self-made chaos. “Oh no, I’ve lost my mind again / Tell you I’m razor sharp, I’m terrifying,” she sings over Lenderman’s acoustic thistle and a rhythmic beat that slows the heart from getting too far ahead of itself. Try as hard as the ebbs might to reign her in, it’s near impossible to heed the visceral nature of Waxahatchee,. Still, there’s always something beautiful about the way her emotions spill into the earth around her.
