Chat Pile – “Funny Man”

“I hate having to explain the content of these songs, because I want it to mean whatever it needs to mean to those listening, but essentially it concerns illusion vs. reality in regards to America and war,” says Chat Pile vocalist Raygun Busch of “Funny” Man”, the latest preview from the Oklahoma City noise rockers’ sophomore effort, Cool World. I’m not sure how you can avoid the obvious on this one, though. The quartet have gotten eerily good at boiling down the ugliest of humankind into a thick glop of stew through triple-jointed maneuvering between the dark worlds of noise and doom metal. Sprinkle in a dash of fun in the form of funk on this go, and while Busch takes on serious matters in satirical ways with how his tongue twists preacherlike, his performance of the soldier as a contracted war machine for our gooning pleasures is categorically unhinged. “The wicked jester is dancing and clapping / As my big strong hands kill the people they told me / There are times that I can almost believe it / I can almost imagine I was meant to do this and be here / Caged life / Caged hurt / Passed down / Past earth,” he seethes, blood rushing at the thought of blood being shed. “Outside there’s no mercy!” The reality of it all is obviously the least funniest thing, but the fool is often the last to know…
