blue zero – “scar”

As blue zero, Chris Natividad is rethinking the way guitars rip rather than cleanly cut in a way that distances himself away from the post-punk angularity of his other band Marbled Eye, and instead explores new textures found in-between. “scar”, the latest preview from the band — which also features Lauren Melton of SUCKER and Rick Altieri of Blue Ocean in its live capacity — and their debut album, colder shade blue, hears them edging their sound closer into the sinister stretches of the back half of the Sonic Youth catalog where darker forms of rock — art-, classic, and psychedelic — burn an indelible mark into the surface with their slow, cyclical patterns. “nowhere to go / but we can stay / here / it’s the only / way,” his voice, brooding just as low as the guitars slumping over, recognizes, and then just lets the electric current tear through. There’s calmness in its wilted electric state, even in being incinerated slowly by the sun.

blue zero’s colder shade blue will be released October 11th on Lower Grand Tapes.
