Touché Amoré – “Hal Ashby”

If life is but a misguided catastrophe, then Jeremy Bolm casts himself as its lead actor on “Hal Ashby”, the latest preview off Touché Amoré’s new album Spiral In A Straight Line. It seems it’s always complicated with accepting anything in life just as it is with this guy. Lingering doubts and second-guessing have been a chronic fatigue of the frontman since day one of reaping into the dreadiest of the existential throughout the Los Angeles post-hardcore band’s songs. Like it’s ode to the acclaimed film director, Bolm is always looking beyond the surface of the obvious answer. “Send me off / Send me away / I’ll take some time, recalibrate / I’ll try anything, anything / If it’ll course correct me.” Though it’s a familiar tree of woes, the one other thing you can always count on from the he and the band is to always flip these kind of long sighs into a life affirming anthem through their shouted songs. It’s second nature, at this stage.
