The E-mu Mo’Phatt is a synth device more popularly stylized for creating beats marketed toward fledgling hip-hop producers. In the hands of Dean Spunt, it is something to explore sound from an entirely different perspective than it was made for, and quite honestly, does so in a mind melt fashion at that. As the latest preview from the No Age drummer and sonic experimentalist’s forthcoming solo album, Basic Edit, Spunt (and its accompanying visuals) play off of the notion that many of the E-mu Mo Phatt’s users have struggled to perfect its best use. In cracking open the interface, Spunt discovers a digital scramble that speaks in skitters and glitches, and vaporizes the further he delves into its core. Has its creators completely gotten it wrong themselves all along? The way Spunt plays it, it’s almost as if he’s unlocked a whole new purpose to its soundmaking through it.
