On what would have been her 58th birthday, Distant Call – Collected Demos 2000 – 2006 — the second of two unearthed collections of Broadcast music being released this year — will bring an undying finality to the brilliance that was Trish Keenan. Following the springtime’s critical Spell Blanket – Collected Demos 2006 – 2009, which held sketches of what would have been, the latest in what will likely be an equally required listen for any of the band’s fans eager for hidden revelations, this now instead looking to Keenan and bandmate James Cargill’s past in culling together early demos of the music that would go on to make up the beguiling experimental psych and synth-pop act’s classic run of Haha Sound, Tender Buttons, and The Future Crayon. The demo for “Come Back to Me” is one such that doesn’t appear on any, however, though its creation spanned from that same era. More than the rest of these releases’ work, this is a message from the great thereafter: Keenan, in her entrancement of the sun, sings plaintively over a folkweb of acoustic guitar in lyrics penned from fan-submitted contributions sent in by postcard, intended to see the light of day. As they return to sender, so does she to us.
Broadcast’s Distant Call – Collected Demos 2000 – 2006 will be released September 28th on Warp Records.
