Spiral XP – “Sinner”

At first glance, “Sinner” doesn’t shine its burning light in your eyes with the same temperature as most Spiral XP songs have to date. There’s something to be said about its deceptive charm of pulling you in, though. The second preview from the buzzy Seattle noise-pop band’s debut full-length, I Wish I Was A Rat, spends its first few moments getting lost in frontman and guitarist Max Keyes’ character work: a person highly self-aware of their own main character headspace in the pursuit of something bigger for themselves in this life, by any means necessary. Taking the Luciferean approach, Keyes with bassist and backing vocalist Lena Farr-Morrissey, guitarists Jordan Mang and Kyle McCollum, and drummer Daniel Byington in tow have found their way back down to Earth after being exiled from heaven-sent. “Now I’m playing center field,” he and Farr-Morrissey harmonize. “I’m a sinner, no big deal.” It’s only then where that high of hubris blinds you with Spiral XP’s distorted glare. As long as the starring role is yours, does it matter who you’ve offended to get there?
