“In Your Bed” is the kind of song that a band can only hope to aspire to when they’ve been hitting their heads against the wall FOREVER now in pursuit of the perfect pop song. Charly Bliss may have gotten some slack from curmudgeonly early listeners for giving up the grungy guitars of yesteryear in favor of — well, guitars that really sound more like synthesizers even though, yes, there very much are electric guitars still there, albeit shooting neon through every single one of singer Eva Hendricks’ appendages like the star she is. “In Your Bed” dials it all back to simpler times, however — just not in that way. A soft-strummed summertime sapphic slowburn that starts out on the beach until its going down the highway at eighty emotionally, it’s the indie pop-rockers’ ultimate finesse, rich in both its sweet spot textures and descript detail of a will-they-or-won’t-they with cheating boyfriend side character drama. “Something good is coming / Everything you say keeps me up all night / Do it for each other / I just wanna be with you all the time,” she sings over its bridge. We never really find out how they spent the summers thereafter, but this one goes down in memory.
Charly Bliss’ FOREVER is available now on Lucky Number.
