The western Washington “don’t call us a shoegaze” loud pop band Spiral XP have been making waves around these pages since last year’s promising first EP, It’s Been Awhile, and this year’s recommended split with fellow Seattle rockers TV Star. To say the anticipation surrounding their long-awaited debut full-length is eager would be an understatement, and that finally has some details behind it when I Wish I Was a Rat arrives this fall. Lead single “Luna” teeters lite grungy riffs with softshell vocals and a starry chorus lines, giving it a an airborne quality that hangs infinitely in the sky and leaves you gazing in awe of everything you experience from that vantage point. “And it’s the look in your eye / Knowing it all,” sings Max Keyes with a natural wonder in that moment of feeling, knowing it to be new found love. It’s enough to change tides.
