Dean Spunt – “Gonzo Bop”

As one half of No Age, Dean Spunt has established an aurally fascinating acumen for venturing outside of bounds with sound as art. No Age’s last album was 2022’s People Helping People, but he’s been tinkering with solo and non-No Age material in between, having last released the John Wiese collaborative effort, Echo Shell, that very same year. This fall will see the Los Angeles Smell scene original’s first proper full-length effort under his own name when Basic Editions is released on Drag City. Apologies to all of the weirdo rippers of No Age’s noise rock in advance — early preview “Gonzo Bop” serves to zone in on the drummer’s experimental electronic penchant as he manipulates syntax systems in a way that pronounces the shape of a being coming from its adversely zoned out canvas, all befitting of its hyper-surreal self-directed visuals. It’s a bop. Just in the very warped universe kind of way you should expect it coming from Spunt.
