Alan Sparhawk – “Can U Hear”

Where Alan Sparhawk would go next, not even the most loyal longtime listener of Low could have plotted out this point. All we knew was that grief would consume whatever he did moving forward following the passing of his wife and Low’s force of the heavens other half, Mimi Parker, after a long battle with ovarian cancer took her from this world in 2022. To his credit, Sparhawk has no qualms in confronting that grief head on, and if anything, it’s fueled further creative rage to exorcise that energy through on “Can U Hear”, the lead impression from his forthcoming solo effort, White Roses, My God. Those expecting something loudly quiet and retreating back to Low’s mournful, humbled acoustic corners of a dimly lit room, think again. Instead, Kim Gordon is in good company here with her indie rock veteran second act, with Sparhawk venturing into curiosities we now know were only scraped upon throughout Low’s late-era, boundless electronic experimentation of 2019’s Double Negative and 2021’s HEY WHAT. Vocals are blown out into ambiguously-defined Auto-Tune shapes and sonically, a crawling EBM bass line ruptures its way over a trap beat under ice. This sounds like nothing of the Alan Sparhawk artistic realm’s past, or of Sparhawk himself. And maybe that’s what he wants you to hear most.
