Where some in the heavy rock world this week are arguing how we might all be better off living as dogs, there are some loudly stating their rebuttal that humankind has already devolved to that point, and Chat Pile are those bastions of peeling back the flesh on our more animalistic existence these days. “I Am Dog Now”, the first single from the Oklahoma City noise rockers anticipated sophomore full-length, Cool World, is a guttural reaction to our further decay that fully commits to the barking bit, slobbering nose and all. Vocalist Raygun Busch is no stranger to gurgling sardonic on society’s shithole state, as he did so with ample black humor to fill a whole void’s worth of existential dread pounding through the cranium on the the band’s 2022 breakthrough debut, God’s Country. The absurdism we now find ourselves has only grown by the tenfold beneath his skin here. “I am dog now / No cage / Nowhere to go at all.” Unleashed, he and the band have gone fully feral in their modern day Homo sapien impression, even if they’re locking into a sludgier groove that slightly domesticates the turbulence wielded by their axe and grind.
