For some, rock ‘n roll is a superficial way of life — an outer fashion statement and attitude projected onto the world, at best. For Midwife’s Madeline Johnston, it goes much deeper than that. It’s her refuge from all of the grief in this life, and while the nomadic Colorado-based songwriter has carried a lot of it with her and blistered it through the frames of her her heaven metal art, the latest single from her new album, No Depression In Heaven, is a homage to how wholly transcendent it can be when prayed upon. “If rock ‘n roll’s a dream / Please don’t wake me,” she sings. A soft burn glow of electricity dusted by meteor light in the western sky and ephemeral glimpses of her peaks rings in the holy spirit. “Rock ‘n roll sees everything / Rock ‘n roll watch over me.” Maybe it isn’t exactly religion, but it’s something to greater to believe in…
