Incredibly, Kendrick Lamar has already won this year’s rap game without even dropping an album. He probably wasn’t even planning on releasing any new music this year for that matter, but Drake poked and prodded the bear, and out came the best of the beast with diss track after diss track until the 6 God found himself buried six feet under. The word-perfect club banger “Not Like Us” definitively put the exclamation mark on it all when it reached number one on the charts, and then was performed on repeat six times to the thrill of everyone in attendance at K-Dot’s celebratory homecoming from the war that was his livestreamed Juneteeth “Pop Out” concert. On Independence Day, he cements the track’s song of the summer status with a new music video directed by visual constant and his pgLang co-founder Dave Free. It’s another mile marker for the culture and this feud. Compton gets its spotlight as do many of those turned up for the Juneneenth concert such as Tommy the Clown, Mustard, Compton native, current Bulls forward, and former Toronto Raptors All-Star DeMar DeRozan, and members of the various dance crews who took the stage. Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith shows his support, and, most pointedly, Lamar’s partner, Whitney Alford alongside their two children, who Crip walk their way all over Drake’s “Family Matters” jabs. An owl piñata gets a bat, and the entire city of Compton chants “O-V-Hoe” on more than one occasion. Kendrick, he’s already dead, but I don’t think anyone will complain if you just keep murdering the guy like this…
