Luster – “Like I Do”

The opening moments of “Like I Do”, the latest single from enigmatic Los Angeles shoegazers Luster, sounds like someone just plugged the aux cable into the speaker a few seconds after the song has already started playing. Pay no attention to the delay — or at least outside of that in pedal form — as from the onset, this wall of sound was created with the intention of immersing you inside heavily drenched feedback in a way that might indicate something else that’s happening from its emotional depths. In the same way this past February’s “Missing You” wasn’t just about ringing shoegaze guitars just for aesthetic’s sake, Luster’s sonic bait of dreamswept electricity is a foil before the full reveal. A spoken word voice memo interlude crackles a wistful memory just before a police siren blearing in the background bleeds through. When it all fades, the soundscape explodes and the true view is right in front of you: “When you see me smile / I can no longer hide / Like I do.”

Luster’s “Like I Do” single is available now.
