Eli Minus entitled her 2020 debut album acts of rebellion. That wasn’t just punctuate further context behind the lyricism scattered through, but a statement of mantra for her creative body as well. To rebel means to even challenge your own self, and on “COMBAT”, the Colombian producer’s first new singular music since that album’s release, she’s rethinking the schematic behind the anarcho-electro-punk medium which made her sound one of the fiercest breakthroughs in the experimental space. Ever-evolving, the listen combines her inventive nature of building out synthetic instruments with those more organic in incorporating acoustics and woodwinds into the frame. The merger between natural and electronic movements shifts the canvas into a new age celestial plane that inform her new movements of revolution through art. “Los pájaros nacidos en jaula / No le tenemos miedo a nada,” she sings in Spanish, which translates to, “We are the birds that only know life inside a cage / And nothing scares us.” Even through peaceful, liminal spaces, Minus’ music sets new courses of flight that fight to escape and exist under their own rule.
