Something that becomes more obvious as you wade further into “Wink”, the lead single from Horse Jumper of Love’s new album, Disaster Trick, is how lost in the same circle your head gets. That’s by intentional design. Vocalist Dimitri Giannopoulos turned to Russian writer Dimitry Baken and his short story, Leaves — which he describes as “partly about people leaving their home for something better but when they return they are back to the same place they started” — in his own song about a man who comes back to the place he started with empty hands and nothing to show for it. Relatable. Too often do our perspectives shift to greener grass we hope will be a solve for whatever is missing in our own skies. That can be a good thing, just so long as we’re not repeating past patterns in the change. HJoL embellish on the lesser of the outcomes, just in case you’re wondering, but the net positive is in how it’s also cementing them as one of the more perceptive energies flowing into the modern slowcore movement. Thoughts slosh around gentle feedback, and there’s no hurry to escape the ebb and flow. Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman joining Giannopoulos in his resignations actually makes you want to stay there for a while. If bliss were a changeless feeling, “Wink” would be the sound of it.
